Stress Management

Stress Management

A lecturer was giving a lecture to his student on stress management. He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, “How heavy do you think this glass of water is?”

The students’ answers ranged from 20g to 500gm.

It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance.

It is the exact same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, the burden becoming increasingly heavier.

What you have to do is to put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it up again. We have to put down the burden periodically, so that we can be refreshed and are ! able to carry on.

So before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. Pick it up again later when you have rested.

Rest and relax. Life is short, enjoy it!! Cheers!!!!!

It’s very enlightening. But to think about it it’s very easy to say but how will I be able not to think of my office problems when I’m resting already on bed? I would like to free myself from all problems in my office but it’s impossible. Tell me how to do it.

Absolutely true yet quite difficult to achieve. What one needs here is mind control to be able to switch off or on and enable living of a full life!

    Excesses are bad.

At the same time little stress is necessary to perform better. But don’t overdo any thing.

The point is made in a manner which will be understood by anybody and will be acceptable to all. However it is very difficult to put down the worries. It’s easier said than done.

I read a similar story. There was a man who on his return from office before entering his house, used to stand near a tree and would gesture as if to remove a bag from his shoulder and hang it on the tree. Similarly in the morning he would gesture as if to take off something from the tree and carry on his back. A person watching it would feel that the man had gone crazy. After sometime he died and the his house was filled with many people to give condolences. Everybody recognized him as a person with a cheerful disposition. One of his close friend when quizzed regarding his odd behaviour in the morning and evening said that his cheerful disposition was due to the fact that he would unburden his office thoughts and stress before he entered the house on the tree.
This is principle one has to follow to have a healthy life.

This article was gr8 not only in terms of just stress management but is has more significance in today changing scenario where metro culture is coming up and people dont have any shoulder to relax their heads.Earlier it was a joint family where we used to share our problems and used to get the required moral support.
